Land west of Kirby Hall Road, Castle Hedingham

Why Here?

We appreciate that Castle Hedingham is a historic village, and there are many important heritage features – not least Hedingham Castle itself – that need to be given thorough and careful consideration, not just the buildings themselves but their wider setting as well.

There are also important technical constraints affecting the village, such as the flood zone and the topography of the area.  In this context, the land west of Kirby Hall Road is arguably the only realistic site for major development in the village – it is outside the flood zone, and contained by the rising topography of the land to the north and east.  The site itself slopes gently to a low point in its south-western corner.

We have already consulted with Historic England, to understand their assessment of the impact of any development here on the setting of Hedingham Castle. Their response confirmed that, ‘whilst the development site is within 1km of Hedingham Castle, it is sufficiently distant (c. 650m) from it and topographically at a much lower level for it not to be a dominant feature within the wider landscape.’ The response also noted that the impact of development ‘could be satisfactorily mitigated through additional landscape planting.’
